Travel Australia - BYO RAM
G'day. Some of you will remember my presentation from MXDU 2004 on GIS apps written in Flash. Out of interest I put the swfs up on our site to see how well they worked over the net - as it turns out surprisingly well. If you have a broadband connection and a bit of spare RAM (it eats RAM for breakfast) try this link:

try the GIS app

It takes a while to load, remember there are over a million data points to clip and render using the drawing API. Click to recentre the map, shift drag up and down to zoom. It works best if you zoom in a fair way then move around - see if you can get ahead of the renderer then watch as it catches up and fills in the detail of wherever you've got to.

A zipped version of the presentation I gave is available here:

Cheers, Robin

I built a fairly involved Flash app for drilling down and selecting geographic regions to refine searches on the Trading Post ® Classifieds website. Regions are defined as clusters of local government areas (LGAs). The GIS data required masses of optimisation and then reconfiguration to support level-of-detail streaming. Check it out at www.tradingpost.com.au - choose any General category to the left of the screen, then on the next screen choose a State and click the Region link. I also developed a Flash app for placing ads on the Trading Post ® Classifieds. Click the 'Place Your Ad' link to take a look. Enjoy! Trading Post ® is an Australian registered trade mark of Telstra Corporation Ltd. This company has requested and has been granted permission from Telstra Corporation Ltd to use the Trading Post ® trade mark. This company is not otherwise associated with Telstra Corporation or any of it's subsidiaries.
